New Salona 44 – Sporty elega
2009-10-21
The new flagship of Salona performance cruiser sailing yachts is going to be presented at forthcoming boat shows. The new model of Salona range follows the success of the highly recognized Salona 45, the first model from the Croatian ship yard that has set the new standards in the range of performance cruisers. Not only that the new Salona 44 follows the philosophy and concept established by her younger siblings – the Salona 34, the Salona 37, the Salona 40 and the Salona 42, but she even goes one step further in her innovation, technology, design, comfort and reliability. The fusion of style and sailing ability will make her appearance impressive at the first sight, but even more important is the thing that lies behind her slender silhouette – an uncompromising construction. Performance seems to be one of the most distinctive and recognizable features of Salona range and like always special attention has been paid to light and strong construction accompanied by the most advanced technology that has Ocean A registry certificate. It can be concluded from her modern layout, that the priority has been given to the idea of making her livable on board. Both exteriors and interiors offer functional and elegant space for pleasant family cruising and exciting racing experience. Comfort and relaxation have been the guideline in design together with modern and high quality materials used in the interiors, which are offered in two different layouts. The Engineering department of Salona has put special efforts in the development of the on board systems that provide more personalized operation of the yacht even in short handed sailing. Stylish and elegant exterior lines developed once again in the cooperation with the world’s famous J&J design studio, give her a reputation of a recognizable and special member of Salona family that has numerous satisfied customers on four continents – Europe, Asia, North America and Australia.

Interiors
The Salona 44’s level of amenity is not usually present in the yachts of this size.
Bearing in mind the importance of pleasant stay aboard both for the family use and the most demanding offshore sailing, the designers have put a lot of effort in defining details that will turn living on the water into an unforgettable experience. The galley area has been allocated in the port with L-shaped configuration that provides more storage for kitchenware, but also more working area which is protected by additional holdings that enable the owner to prepare the meals while sailing on the open waters, too. Extra storage space has been also applied to the refrigeration units that normally match yachts of significantly bigger size. With the intention of the daily use, generous bathroom has been allocated opposite to galley on starboard. Navigational corner lies next to bathroom area and it is suitable for the easy communication with cockpit, but also it represents the heart of the on board systems that have been integrated for the easy control and access. Next to the navigational corner is situated a generous sofa making it possible also for the guests on board to participate in the navigational plans. In addition, it opposes the large seating area on port that together with large foldable table in the center creates a comfortable seating area for the whole crew. The whole area is filled with daily light that is provided with stylish and also highly functional cabin and roof windows. The mat finished teak joinery is hand crafted to follow the hull lines which make the most efficient use of interior space. Generally speaking, the owners will welcome the warm, generous and open interior and the clever use of abundant storage areas.

The sleeping quarters
With two basic configurations designed in order to match different owner’s needs, both three and four cabin configurations offer comfortable resting areas with plenty of space. Two stern cabins provide high level of privacy and apart from king sized double beds and standing height these areas are provided with large wardrobes and storages. There are two versions of the front part of the yacht. A three-cabin layout takes advantage of full beam arrangement and normally has the owner cabin with bathroom and a king sized bed, but also it has extra spaces for the most comfortable living and private use. A four cabin version offers second cabin on port that provides extra sleeping area, specially suitable for the children stay in the close vicinity of their parents. All the cabins are filled with daily light and fresh air and have been created in a way to guarantee privacy and comfort for each area.

Outside areas
As her predecessors, the Salona has kept her elegant open Mediterranean style combined with safety provided with the protected areas which make her suitable for Mediterranean winter sailing as well as for the North Sea conditions. Simplicity and single handed sailing have been the main goal for optimizing all on board systems. The deck arrangement now features a German mainsheet system which is led under the deck. There is also a dedicated life raft locker located bellow cockpit near the transom which will allow quick and “hassle-free” deployment in the case of an emergency situation arising. Allocation of genoa rolling system under the deck makes the new Salona 44 more elegant but it also makes this mostly used sailing operation flawless. Cockpit storages have been enlarged and as a result the life on board is more simple and more space is provided for extra toys intended for every-day entertainment in the water activities. Special attention has been paid to the development of the twin steering wheels system that together with allocation of main traveler make the communication with cockpit simple as well as touching the surface of the water. The cockpit area has a large seating area, which has been ergonomically shaped for efficient regatta use. The side walk makes it easy to communicate with bow part, in fast and safe mode. Bow will not only provide easy handling during the sailing and racing but also a large sun area.

Construction and technology
Construction of the Salona 44 has recently incorporated a range of the latest available and proven technologies and techniques adopted at Salona Engineering department. The hull and deck laminates are constructed with the use of epoxy based vinylester resin with triaxial and biaxial E-Glass fabrics adopting the latest infusion method. Not only does it give to the finished product a minimal weight, but also an extraordinary strength and stiffness. As a result, the Salona 44 is not only lighter, stronger and stiffer than the Salona 45 she replaces but she is also much faster. For further assurance of the integrity of the hull/keel/rig system, there is an integrated bonding of these critical components using a structural grid of stainless steel. Not only does this grid lock these key components together, but it also spans the total internal waterline length between the two main bulkheads, resulting in an almost indestructible central unit. This innovative stainless steel grid construction will give any skipper a complete confidence to take the Salona 44 across any ocean without fear of a failure.

Sailing/racing ability
The Salona 44 offers a more generous sail plan than her predecessor the Salona 45, but not at the expense of ease of sailing or sure footedness. With its design ingenuity, the increased sail area is expertly complemented by the latest design thinking in her underwater lines. This improvement together with her efficient and well balanced keel, ballast and rudder arrangements will make the sailing on the new Salona 44 pleasant under any conditions. The Salona 44 will prove to be not only a safe and luxury cruiser but also an exciting, competitive yacht under both the IRC and ORC racing rules. The Salona 44 offers a new level of refinement and sophistication which is accompanied with the ability to cruise in a relaxed, yet confident manner or to perform to the highest levels in both IRC and ORC regattas. The ship yard also offers expert advices for different handicap optimization with special racing oriented packages.
